Range Rules

Range Rules

  • Caprock Rifle Club & Range is a “cold range”. All firearms are to be kept in a safe and empty condition until on the firing line.  When on the firing line, empty chamber indicators are to be used when firearms are not in active use. All firearms must be unloaded when transitioning from ground level to the elevated firing area.
  • Everyone is a safety officer. If you observe an unsafe condition either downrange or on the firing line, call “CEASE FIRE” immediately! Make the line safe until the situation can be resolved and safe operations can resume.
  • Range hours: 7:00AM to 8:00PM Tuesday-Saturday, and 1:00PM-8:00PM Sunday. No shooting allowed after sunset, regardless of time in relation to closing.
  • All Federal, state, and local firearm laws must be obeyed.
  • No guests are allowed without prior notification. This is to be accomplished by purchasing a guest pass through the range website, at which time the guest’s information will be provided to Caprock Rifle Club & Range. Guests must bring their signed Release Form to be placed in the drop box immediately upon arrival at the range.
  • Member gate codes shall be issued upon commencement of membership term, and are to be kept confidential. Any member found to be sharing his/her gate code shall be subject to membership revocation.
  • Never walk or drive past any closed gates, cables, safety cones or barricades without checking to see if that area is a live-fire area.
  • Prior to going down range for target inspection or maintenance, the range must be made to cease fire and all weapons on line made clear and safe. This requires visual and verbal confirmation that all firearms are clear and other members are off the firing line. No handling of firearms or ammunition while members are down range. Once the line is made safe, the down range indicator system must be turned on prior to entering the impact area.
  • The impact area must be clear of all personnel prior to commencement of firing.
  • Vehicles must remain on established roads and designated parking areas. For target locations beyond 1500 yards, the use of off highway vehicles is highly recommended.
  • Property wide speed limit for all vehicles is 15MPH.
  • All members and guests are required to wear eye and hearing protection.
  • Shooting is allowed from authorized firing positions only. It is the shooter’s responsibility to know your target and what is behind it, and to refrain from firing if any unsafe condition exists. Do not shoot into neighboring property.
  • Members shall not bring any non-approved target materials to the range. This includes, but is not limited to, glass, plastic, clay pigeons, metal barrels or cans, junk or scrap material of any kind. Approved target materials are paper or cardboard, and the steel targets provided by Caprock Rifle Club & Range.  All target materials brought in by a member must be fully removed upon conclusion of their session.
  • Steel targets at a distance of less than 1000 yards from the firing line are restricted to .338 caliber and below, or .375-.458 calibers with a muzzle velocity of 2600FPS or less.
  • Dedicated targets for .22 Rimfire use are located on the western side of the firing line/range area, within the first 300 yards. These targets will be clearly marked as “22LR Only”, and are not to be engaged with any other caliber. Violators of this rule shall be made to cover cost of replacement for damaged targets and stands, and may also face membership revocation without refund.
  • Steel targets shall not be moved from their locations.
  • Shooters must provide their own white spray paint and are required to repaint all targets before they leave the range. Zeroing/load development ranges will be equipped with target stands, but members must provide their own paper targets and cardboard backing.

  • Caprock Rifle Club & Range may refuse anyone the right to shoot and may order anyone to leave the range to enforce the range rules and preserve the safety of the range or the safety of its members.
